TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Training before an application

Applicants must demonstrate handgun safety competence through an accepted course or qualification. Confirm instructor and documentation rules with the sheriff.

Practical next step: Ask the issuing authority whether your instructor, course format, certificate, and live-fire qualification satisfy the current application rules before paying for a class.

NONRESIDENTS AND TRAVEL

Crossing a state line changes the rules

An Oregon sheriff may issue to a resident of a contiguous state, subject to the sheriff's process and statutory findings. Oregon does not broadly recognize other states' licenses.

Reciprocity caution: Recognition of a permit does not make every rule identical. Vehicle carry, notice signs, prohibited places, duty to inform, alcohol-related locations, and magazine or firearm restrictions may differ.
